  • VISA REQUIREMENT

If you do not already hold a UK immigration status that allows study, you will need to apply for a UK visa: Standard Visitor visa if you will study on a semester-only programme. Please note that you are not allowed to work or do internships on a Standard Visitor visa. Some nationalities need to apply for this visa before travelling to the UK and some can request this immigration permission on arrival as Non-visa nationals.

Non-visa nationals requesting Standard Visitor visa at the UK Border will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling.
Student visa if you will study on a full-year programme. You must apply for this visa and receive a successful decision before travelling to the UK.

Please consult the UKVI website for more details.

Always check the UKVI website for the most up-to-date information and visa rules.

  • STUDENT DECLARATION

I confirm that the statements made in this application are complete and truthful. I understand that any misrepresentation may result in my expulsion from the programme. I confirm that, if admitted to SOAS, I undertake to comply with the SOAS Student Charter.

I agree, in line with the UK Data Protection Act 1998 and 2018 (GDPR), to allow SOAS to process personal data contained on this form and other data which SOAS may obtain from me or organisations whilst I am applying for admission.

I understand that I am required to hold medical insurance for my entire stay in the UK if I am not on a Student Visa.

  • STEP 2

Applicant should collect the following necessary documents
  • 1. ACADEMIC REFERENCE

Please ask a Professor or other academic member of staff to write you an academic reference, in English, commenting on your current/previous progress and suitability to follow a programme of study at university level.

The reference should include the Referee's contact details, be written on letterheaded paper and signed and dated by the Referee.

The Referee should either return the reference to you and/or to your Home University Study Abroad Office to be submitted at the bottom of this form. Alternatively, they may send this directly to studyabroad@soas.ac.uk with your name in the subject matter.

    2. OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT

Please obtain a complete and OFFICIAL transcript from the university/college you are currently attending. If you are not currently attending, please submit your most recent transcript.

    3. PROOF OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

All applications require proof of English proficiency unless the following applies:

    1. You are a native English speaker and a national of one of the countries listed on UKVI's Knowledge of English
    2. You are studying a full-time degree in one of the countries listed on UKVI's Knowledge of English (except Canada)

All other applicants must submit appropriate test results as your application cannot be considered without it.

Which results do I need to submit?

The answer depends on your programme length, country of origin and level of English.

Visitor Visa applicants: Submit IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, or Pearson Academic.

Student Visa applicants: A SELT may be required. We recommend students choose the UKVI IELTS Academic or UKVI PTE Academic as the test of first resort.

SOAS also recognises additional exams and international qualifications as proof of English proficiency. SOAS does not accept language qualifications other than those listed on the English Language Reqirements page.

IMPORTANT: Pre-sessional courses are not covered under Exchange agreements and must be paid for by the student/home institution.
